How to create a Ghost Boot ISO for use with VMWare Machine and VMXNET 3 NIC

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Hi all,

GSS 11.5.1.2266

VMware NIC - VMXNET 3

VMware Machine - vmx-09

VMware VCenter Server - 5.5.0.147627

I'm was trying to capture an image of a Windows 2012R2 Virtual Machine via the mounting of an ISO to the VM (as the OS client does not work due to it being unsupported), and started to post this query, but ended up figuring out the answer through a well time Google search. However, as I was part way through I thought I would continue and post the solution, just in case anyone else stumbled across this.

The standard WinPE image drivers that are installed include the VMware.vxnet and vmware-nic drivers, however, on boot the WinPE does not recognise the NIC and so cannot connect.

I did read elsewhere on here that you might be able to create a PCDOS image with 3COM drivers, but I haven't done anything like this in over 20 years so could not remember what to do. In the end, I Googled 'VMXNET 3 drivers' and came across the answer.

On your VM (mine is a Windows 2012R2 server), check out the "Program Files\Common Files\VMware\Drivers\" folder. In here you should find the 'VMXNET 3' folder. Copy this to a location where you Ghost Boot Wizard can access. Go through the motions of modifying the WinPE image by pointing to and adding this driver (make sure you select the driver after adding it!), then wait as the Image is de and re-compressed.

Now re-create you Boot ISOs using the modified WinPE image. Mount this ISO to the VM, reboot and away you go.

Cheers

Chris

I need a solution

Hello Everyone,

I have a PC with Symantec Ghost 11.5 on it and I would like to re install it on a server...  The problem is I do not have anything, lol.  The old IT Director is the one who installed it and he did not maintain any records on it. So how do I go about moving it?  Where can I get the installation media and where might I find the license file or serial number?  Please let me know any questions.

Thanks

PXE Booting - Error 546

I need a solution

Good Day,

I am having endless issues PXE booting a Lenovo E540 machine from our Ghost Cast Server.

All the lenovo laptops we have had up until this new model have not given any problems. Our Ghostcast server is running the 3COM TFTP Server for the PXE booting option. I have changed the E540 to Legacy boot mode and it picks up the PXE boot session. It starts loading, beeps and shows the Ghost Cast interface screen prompting ERROR 546 : Output error file to the following location A:\ghosterr.txt

I have tried adding the "-afile=c:\errorfile.txt" to the commandline of the ghostcast server with no avail. If i Cancel the error message I get an "Application Error 40217 - Cannot create a file preservation Metadata at filepath "."

I assume there is a problem with the mapping of where the image is located. But what I cannot figure out is whether this is related to the E540 range of laptops in general. I have tried 3 different E540, yielding the same result. All the other models so far have not given any problems (eg. E520, E531).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

No bootable device found

I need a solution

Hello,

I took an audit image from an Acer Travelmate b133 to deploy, and for some reason, when I deploy the image using a local connection, it shows "no bootable device found".  I'm using Ghost 11.5, Windows 7.  This has not happened with any other image that I've taken or deployed, even on other Acers.  I checked the integrity of the image, and it was good.  The image completed without any issues.  The BIOS settings are the same on both computers.  I checked the hard drive with Hiren's, and windirstat shows that the files ARE on the C:\ drive of the imaged computer.  I checked to see if there was an MBR, and it was there (using MBRwiz).

I've been banging my head against the wall for a couple of days now.  Any help?  I've also tried deploying image with FOG, but it did the same thing:  "no bootable device found".

I don't know what to check anymore.  It's a brand-new acer (both of them are).  It's an audit image, so it doesn't run into the issue of deploying a live image.

Thanks for any and all help!

No networking in Ghost Boot disk

I need a solution

I am running an older version of Ghost Solution Suite and getting 19945 timeouts, so I downloaded the latest version 2.5 as a trial.

I am running ghost server on server 2003 with WinPE2.0.  I am trying to create astandard boot disk, running winPE. for my Dell Latitude E3340, with an Intel(R) Ethernet connection 1218-LM NIC.

I added 32 bit and 64 but Vista drivers from Intel website

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=18718

When I boot the laptop with this disk the networking is not initialized (ipconfig shows nothing), so I can't connect to my Ghost cast server.

My networking is working fine, I can boot using my DOS V8.0 disk, with no problems getting an IP via DHCP, and no problems connecting to the Ghost cast server.

How do I get networking initialized during or after WinPE boots? I have spent 3 weeks struggling this and now it is affecting my work :(

Please help!

Thank you in advance,

Symantec Boot Disk Creator 12.0.0.6277 & Networking Issues

I need a solution

Good Evening.

I just downloaded the latest Boot Disk Creator for use with WinPE 4.0 / 5.0 to create a new 64bit Boot Disk for imaging our workstations.

After creating the new disk, I booted into Ghost in an attempt to run a GhostCast session, however it appeared that I was not getting an IP Address, not even 127.0.0.1.  I incorrectly assumed that the newest Intel LAN Drivers were not installed, and spent a good hour getting them injected into the WIM File.

Having booted again into the Environment, I still was not getting a local IP Address in the GhostCast Window, so I did an ipconfig within the Command window, lo and behold, I had a valid IP there, but for some reason it was not showing up in Ghost64.

What I am wondering, is if this is a bug with the 64bit version of Ghost client, or is there a switch that I'm missing?  It would be rather handy to have the IP Address listed and not have to run IPConfig every time.

Thanks!

Trying to image laptop with a GPT hard drive.

I need a solution

I am having a problem creating a working image of a laptop loaded with Windows 8 that has a GPT hard drive. I can capture an image but when I apply it to another machine it will not boot up. I get an error code 0xc0000225.

I have an external hard drive that boots up a windows PE image configured with ghost 11.5. I have tried using the Image Boot, Image All, and Image Disk switches to create the image. The end result is still the same. The machine I apply the image to comes up with a 0xc0000225 error on booting up.

I have been able to capture working images of Windows 8 on machines configured with a MBR hard disk but so far not GPT. Also these systems cannot be converted to MBR.

How can I capture a working image of this machine?

Question about network connection of GhostCast.

In the chart "2.3. Unicasting" in the following KB,
it indicates "224.77.0.0/Client IP*" for destination address.

How the Ghost Console and Client communicate over the network
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

It is ok about "224.77.0.0" but what does "/Client IP" means?
Does it mean IP address of the client which is source of this traffic?

Software Compliance with Ghost Products

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

I've used Ghost a couple years ago and had great results with it.  Saved me a lot of time.  I'm now working with a smaller firm that would benefit from this product and was asked a question by an owner that I didn't have an immediate answer for, and told him that I would check with Symantec and get back to him.

We understand when we get a new model of PC and set it up to a standard, we're able to save that image as a ghost image and be able to push it down to other computers of the same make/madel and have it all set up.  His question is, "Doesn't the machine with the new image still have the same OS serial number as the old one, even though you purchased the new computer with a licensed OS."

I understand what he means and I'm hoping to find an explanation in this forum.  Do we need to have volume licensing from Microsoft or what is the way to explain this and still be compliant?

I would appreciate your input.

S.O.S - Ghost64 - winload.exe Error Message

I need a solution

Hi,

I received an Error message after restoring image.

I created Disk to Image via the Ghost64bit v11.4.1 (With Ghost Default Flags).

Then I boot up from WIN PE (DiskOn Key) and run the following script to restore the Image:

%UTILSDIR%\ghost64.exe -clone,mode=load,src=%IMAGESDIR%\xp1.GHO,dst=2,SZE1=F -sure -fdsz

But after the Restore finished, the system reboots and I receive the following Error :

Windows boot Manager

File: \Windowssystem\winload.exe

Status: 0xc000000e

If I run the Ghost manually and select 'Disk from Image' manually and select the image location and disk destination, the system reboots and

everything works OK.

Can somebody please help with this issue.

Thanks

Issues with Ghostcast and changing multicast group?

I need a solution

Bit of background first: GSS 2.5.1 running on Windows Server 2008 R2, has worked for us for many years without issue to image a couple computer labs (roughly 200 computers total).

Our network team has just moved us to a new network architecture, and now the 224.x.x.x range is no longer usable for multicast across the network (in our case between vlans in different buildings, all connected through a gbit network). They advised using 239.x.x.x instead. I had a look and sure enough in the Ghostcast server there is an option to change the multicast range so I've changed it from 224.77.2.0 to 239.77.2.0 (and the respective end range). Hit OK, rebooted the entire server to be sure. Start a new ghostcast session and while computers can connect to the ghostcast server the actual multicast distribution doesn't start (the clients sit there waiting).

Opened up a command prompt to check, and sure enough netsh interface ip show joinsshows only a session joined on 224.77.0.0, despite the option being set to 239.77.2.0. If I stop the session then that join disapears, so I know its coming from Ghostcast.

Changing it back to 224.77.2.0 and it still shows the same when I restart the session. Or changing it to anything else.

I also tried calling Ghostsrv.exe from the command line with the appropriate switches and still no luck.

GhostSrv.exe -M239.77.2.0-239.77.255.255 "c:\RESTORE.gho" -N2 -TTL32 -UU -Fc:\ghost.log -LA ghostsess

The log file though does show that its using 239.77.2.0

Two questions I have for anyone who may know before I endure a possibly long phone call to tech support:

1. Does this option work? Or is it known to not actually affect anything?

2. Has anyone else had success in using a different range than 224.x.x.x? I've searched but not found much useful in past discussions

Win7 64b Ghost Errors

I need a solution

I have been runing Ghost solution suite for a few years.  I only take images of laptops and deploy images as needed.  Up until now I have only done Windows XP.  I have my first batch of Windows 7 64 bit laptops.  I was able to take a stock image and an image f a configured laptop.  When I tied todeploy the image onto the same make/ model laptop, I got a corrupted image error abut 75% of the way through the process.  I also noticed that taking an image and deploying an image takes much much longer now than it did previously.  It takes about 3-4 hours to create an image and almost as lng to deploy before it errors out.  I am currently using Ghost 11.5.1.2266.  The laptops I am having the issue with is a Getac S400.  Is there smoething I should be doing differently with a Win7 64b machine vs. Windows XP? BTW, I am using PC DOS to create a boot CD, then I boot from that CD into ghost.  I create a job name and pick the image I am deploying.

I need a solution

Hello,

We use Ghost Solution suite 11.5.1.2266 On Windows 2008R2 Server

Have multiple classrooms connected via Ghost Console to deploy images to weekly. The hardware we are deploying to is Dell optiplex 745, 755, 390, 790, 7010 & 9020. One of our departments will build the images and after building they need to do an Image check to verify it captured properly. This is done on a Windows 8 machine via Ghost32.exe by clicking LOCAL -> CHECK -> IMAGE FILE. They want to be able to see the mapped networkdrives under "look in:" field where you can see the local drives, but not any mapped drives. The account they are logging into on that Windows 8 machine is part of an AD security group that has full access to the shared folder on our FTP server. Then the images get automatically sinced to different sites that will use them.

You can get to the foders under file name by typing out the unc path \\Server-name\share but I want to make this easy for them to find.

I am able to get it to show up in "look in" using the syntax below. But after reboot it is gone. It will only work if from an elevated command prompt.

Net use k: \\server-name\share /user:username password /persistent:yes

I have tried to set the Ghost32/64 to run as an administrator. And in compatibility mode. I believe it used to show up with not ineraction. I have also check windows firewall and that is shut off.

A little back ground if needed. After the pc configuration is done. That department will PXE boot the machine to capture the image after setting up a session via Ghost cast server. The PXE setup is identical to the setup in this Doc https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/one-pxe-menu-unite-them-all-dos-linux-winpe

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Ghost Suite Clients Disconnect Upon Restart to Create Image

I need a solution

We're trying to set up a Ghost server using the Ghost Console and have run into an issue with clients on a different subnet than the Ghost Console - some of these clients are on a different domain as well. On the console, we are able to remotely install the Ghost client software to the machine, regardless of their subnet location, and they appear in the network list and we are able to create a backup regime for them. However, when we attempt to create a backup image for the remote machine from the console, if the target client is on a different subnet than the console, the backup procedure always fails. Before failing, the target client does its system restart to initiate the backup procedure. The event log claims the remote machine times out after restarting the computer. After we get the error message about the time out, we are able to ping the console from the client, and vice versa, so it seems like all communication between the two machines is fine. Are there any suggestions as to what we can do to fix this issue?

The Ghost Console is installed on a WD DX4000 SAN running Server 2008 R2 Essentials.

The clients range from Win 2k - Win 7, but the issue seems to be more network related and not determined by client OS.

Hey,

So my company has been ghosting Win XP computer images to groups of slightly older machines for a non-profit affiliate. Until now everything has gone somewhat okay, but now I am attempting to do a group of gateway computers (MFATXHRN MDP E-4100) and the error I have run into is something new.  I made sure to add the correct LAN and Chipset drivers to the ghost boot disk I created using the boot wizard (Ghost solution suite 11.5). Now though I am get a video card driver failed to initialize error, which does not make sense to me and I cannot seem to find anyone who can explain it so far. I have never seen any indication that the boot disk added any video card drivers, although I could understand if it was as simple as that. Please let me know the answer.

Thank you
