I need a solution

After Installing GSS 3.0, I recieve this error when trying to open the console. There is no service with this name listed in Services.

I've tried installing twice with the same results. Custom Install, database resides on a previous install of SQL 2008 R2 Express.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

GSS 3.0 UEFI Automation Folder

I need a solution

I had high hopes for GSS and UEFI support but it seems that automation folders do work on a system that is already running Windows 7x64 in UEFI mode.  Asking it to reboot to automation just results in it's return to Windows with the console message "Unable to boot to automation".

Using the boot disk creator, I did choose x64 for the processor type on Step 1 and tried both x86 and x64 for the boot media processor type on step 2.  The folder was installed by double clicking the executable from the Windows 7 x64 UEFI computer.

I have not yet tried booting it via GSS's built in PXE server.  However, we cannot get that to work reliably in our environment due to Infoblox appliances sometimes failing to deliver IP addresses within the PXE boot timeout.

I could script my way around any of these issues if I could just get my computers to boot into WinPE 5 from a UEFI only system without PXE.

Ghost multicast, UEFI, and large images.

It is still not clear if Ghost is even aware of EFI system partitions or if you have to do the manual DISKPART script to recreate one from scratch and perhaps bcdboot.exe to copy the efi system files.  While it is workable for us to use Ghost to image just the one partition, it's not a one stop shop and requires custom scripts to get it to work.  Our image this year (with the full Adobe Cloud 2014) is around 30GB.  It's becomming unsustainable to use peer multicast to push such large images.  As GSS doesn't seem to support site servers, I don't see it being able to set up a ghostcast server so that half the bandwidth is not lost on peer multicast.  I've been using scripts to shrink the C drive and create recovery partitions to pre-copy the image ahead of time.  The copy process is slow but I can do that slowly and the go real fast when it's imaging time.  When it's image time, I can then image any number of machines at the same time as they are not using the network for multicast traffic.  Prior, with rdeploy, we could do about 30 or so before rdeploy would simply fail with an unexpected network failure.

So far I see no compelling reason to upgrade to GSS over DS 6.9 SP6 (which contains PE4).

I need a simplified rundown of how to migrate a Ghost server

I need a solution

Hey everyone,

Essentially, I had been running Ghost before to image multiple computers at a time. Unfortunately, the multicast has been creating a broadcast storm and causing some noticeable network issues. The plan moving forward is to set up Ghost on its own, alienated server in order to prevent interference with the rest of the network. I am relatively new to IT, and I've read similar questions to this one, but wasn't able to dig too deep in to the solutions due to unknown terminology, or omitted steps (due to my lack of experience, I suppose.) Can someone give me a quick "explain like I'm five" rundown of how to migrate our server with the preset images intact?

Thanks!

GSS 3.0, PXE, and DHCP

I need a solution

I used to run GSS 2.5 with the provided 3com and tftp tools, that worked great.

Now, I've got GSS 3.0 up and running, I've installed the PXE Server with it, and added the DHCP role to that 2008 server. During the install I added the Linux and Win PE 5.1 preboot environments and I've selected the "Auto detect Microsoft DHCP server and configure for PXE" option in the PXE Configuration Utility.

When booting up a client to PXE I can get an IP address, but the error is PXE-E53: No boot filename recieved.

Don't I also have to have the boot file and location in DHCP (Options 66 & 67) ?

I don't see this anywhere in the documentation or videos.

GSS 3.0 Console on Remote Machine - Installation Issues

I need a solution

I am trying to install the GSS 3.0 console on a remote system from where the main install is located.  If i try to install it with source files for the installer on the local Win7 machine, it stops at 83%.  If I try to install it from the 2008R2 server onto a remote Win7 machine, it stops at 68%.

The installer does not crash, it just stops.  The little picture of the 2 computers lighting up with the lighted dots keeps going, it will prompt me if i click cancel, etc, but it never finishes.  Is there a log somewhere that tells me what it is trying to do when it stops?

thanks!

Help with updating images GSS 2.5

I need a solution

Our IT delpt. provides discs used to image our laptops, These laptop images will boot to Gag bootloader giving an option to re-apply the image, this is done after every event a laptop goes out on. These images are getting very  out of date. We used to have a ghost boot disc I used here to update the images until someone , me, scratched it. I have been trying to make a new boot disc to update the images but am not getting it to work like I want.

The new disc I have made is a windowsPE boot disc from the GSS boot wizard.

Images are saved directly on the machine on a partition, using the old disc I would select the source (c drive) and point the image to overwrite the existing image. Only options I would have to select were allowing overwrite and no compression. Then after each rental I would select the image to be applyed and it would re-image the laptop without an issue.

Now using the new disc I can update the image, however, the issue I am having comes when the updated image is used. After selecting the image and starting the re-imaging process via gag boot loader ghost now asks for each span one at a time and I have to select the spans periodically throughout the imaging process. Unlike before when it just applied the entire image.

Is there a way for the created image to be saved that it will automatically find its next span, and so on and so forth until the imaging process is completed?

Thank you for any help, I've got many hours into trying to figure this out.

Failed to load automation partition on XP machine

I need a solution

Hello,

I know that during the beta phase of GSS 3.0, that there was/is a known issue where on an XP PC that the automation partion installer would fail with the following error: "not a valid win 32 application" and it would fail at that point. I have tried all known ways of creating the automation partition to load on an XP PC, and it will only keep failing with the above error. This does not happen on Win 7, and the partition loads fine, saving the current OS, but creating the automation partition as well. I need this to work (as I'm sure others do as well), since I have many XP machines, and it would be desireable to load the automation partition using XP as the OS to install under. We could then load the management agent on the PC as well, and then have much less overall work to do, than to blow away all data and manually load a partition.

Please tell me you have worked this out, or that it is being worked on. It is a huge issue for us, and without being able to do the above, it limits Ghost's functionality.

Ghost console fails at 99% with could not allocate page table memory error

I need a solution

I've been using Ghost Console 11.5 to take images of laptops prior to redeploying them, it's been working fine but recently on a number of different models the client will install OK and I can create an image create task and run that OK and it all appears to be working OK and will then get stuck at 99% complete. If you look at the laptop i'm taking the image from it's no longer displaying the ghost image create screen and sown multiple instances of an error saying could not allocate page table memory.

Anyone have any ideas, bit stuck as to what woudl be the cause. Given that teh image process starts OK I doubt it's network drivers.

GSS 2.5 - WinPE & Intel NIC - NIC Power Saving may cause connectivity problem

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Hello everybody,

just sharing this information

if you use GSS 2.5, and WinPE boot environement with good NIC drivers , you may encouter connectivity problem if you have Intel NIC.

Here my story:

I have Windows 7 x64 with ghost 2.5 client, and everything went fine (tasks, WinPE,...). Since Yesterday WinPE is not able to communicate with my network, but driver and IP is correctly set... strange.

So I realyse that yesterday I have upgrade my NIC driver in Windows 7 x64 with the last available Intel, 20.0 version. this version activate Power Saving options, harcoded in the NIC!!! WinPE and the Vista drivers (18.4) don't "wake up" the NIC and there is no network...

So, if you upgrade you Intel NIC driver and encouter problems with WinPE, think of deactivate Power Saving Options in windows drivers management

Can't Install Client on Windows 8.1 Laptop

I need a solution

I'm happy to finally have GS 3.0 and I've set it up on Server 2008 R2, and deployed it to 2 Windows 7 machines with no problems. For the life of me I can't install the client on a Windows 8.1 laptop, even with Symantec Endpoint disabled. No matter what I've tried, I get the following error---The network path was not found.' . Unable to connect to computer! Log file reads...

JOHNVYHNANEK_PC:

Install settings:
Connecting to server 169.254.233.244 on port 402.
This agent can be remote controlled from the console.
The agent is not password protected.
Prompting for execution, reboot, and/or remote control events.
The user will be prompted for 10 seconds, then the operation will continue.
Always connected to the server, never refreshing the connection.

Events:
Starting install for machine JOHNVYHNANEK_PC.
'The network path was not found.' . Unable to connect to computer JOHNVYHNANEK_PC with username John J Vyhnanek .
--------------------------------------------------

Well, I can connect to it through the network and access the root, plus ping works just fine. DCHP is used in all sucessful installs and with this laptop, I've also tried using the IP but that doesn't work either

Is there a way, like in GS 2.5, where I can install the client directly from my download without installing the entire solution? Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Help and or suggestions are appreciated. johnvins

Ghost Server will not perform Sysprep/Imaging functions

I need a solution

Hello:

I'm unable to get Ghost to perform any Sysprep functions.  I'm running Ghost on a Windows 2003 platform. Ghost version is 11.5.1.2266. My goal is to be able perform a Sysprep/Image Capture of a Windows 7 (SP1 64-bit) desktop.

Imaging on its own works perfectly fine as it always has. My problem is with the Sysprep function. I have tried numerous configurations but always end up with the same result which is that the Windows 7 system produces some dialogue and then reboots itself without performing the Sysprep. I always have to reboot it a second time after this function before it will reconnect to the PXE Server.

I tried using the Windows 7 (64-bit) configuration built into Ghost but that doesn't work. I then tried copying all the Windows 7 Sysprep files onto the Ghost Server and adding my own configuration. When I browse for my Sysprep files it locates them and displays the following:

Supported OS: N/A

Sysprep.exe: 6.1.7600.16385

SysprepCL.exe: 6.1.7601.17514

When I click on the OK button nothing happens. It never lets me go any further and consequently doesn't allow me to add my own config.

I have read all of Chapter 23 of the Implemention Guide and think I'm doing everything as described but just can't get it to work.  I've included a couple of screenshots.

Am I missing something? It would be a lifesaver to get this to work.

GSS 3.0 Application filtering

I need a solution

We're settiing up application filters to be able to identify systems that have older Internet Explorer versions that need to be updated for compliance. In browsing through the properties of each system, on the Applications icon, the only thing listed for systems is IE40, IE4Data, IE5BAKEX or IEData, all with *32 and *64 versions.  There's no specific entry for (Microsoft) Internet Explorer and a manual check of each system shows that Internet Explorer (8-11) is installed on the system.

Is there any way to correctly identify the specific version of browser installed on a client system currently or is the inventory system just generic and is scheduled to be worked on more in the future to get a better inventory off of a system?

Virtual Partition Availability in GSS3.0?

$

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

I'm currently under the understanding that the Virtual Partition is not available as a boot option in GSS3.0.  Is this corrcect?

If so, will it be developed as an option in GSS3.x at a later point  ...is this still an objective and is there a time frame?

Converting to PXE isn't all that enthralling for us ...and certainly visiting all the organizations computer to enable it isn't too inviting an idea either.

Thanks for the feedback
